What does GEO stand for? Generative engine optimization, in plain English
Someone who wanted coffee beans used to type “best coffee subscription” into Google and get ten links. Today a growing number of them ask ChatGPT instead, and get a paragraph naming three roasters. If you are not one of the three, nothing on your website tells you. There is no missing visit to notice.
GEO is the name for the work of finding out, and doing something about it. This page explains what the letters stand for, what genuinely changed, what is honestly known about being named in these answers, and the things nobody can promise you.
What GEO stands for
GEO stands for generative engine optimization.
A generative engine is any tool that writes you an answer instead of handing you a list of links: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews, Gemini, Copilot. Optimization is borrowed straight from SEO — search engine optimization, the long-standing craft of getting a website to show up in Google. So GEO is the same instinct pointed at a new surface: instead of trying to appear in a list of links, you are trying to appear in a written answer.
Two honest warnings about the name.
It collides with an ordinary word. “Geo” already means geography — geo-targeting, geolocation, geology. Search the three letters on their own and most of what comes back is about maps. Nothing to do with this.
And the term is not settled. You will also see AEO (answer engine optimization), LLMO, AI SEO, and a handful of vendor coinages. No standards body has ruled, no one has won the argument, and the acronyms mostly describe the same job: being present in the answer a machine writes about your category. A vendor who tells you their acronym is the correct one is selling you the acronym.
One more word, then we drop it
LLM stands for large language model, the kind of software behind ChatGPT. When the rest of this page says “the model,” that is what it means.
What actually changed
A search result was a list. An answer is a shortlist.
Ten blue links plus a map gave a small business ten chances. Being seventh was not the same as being invisible — a certain kind of customer scrolled, compared, opened four tabs. An AI answer does none of that. It names two or three businesses, sometimes five, with a sentence each, and stops. There is no page two. There is nothing below the fold to scroll to.
Three things follow from that, and between them they are the whole reason this subject exists.
- The shelf got shorter. Ten slots became three. The businesses that were surviving on positions five through ten of a search page do not have an equivalent position in an answer.
- The absence is silent. When you slipped off the first page of Google, your traffic fell and your analytics showed it. When an AI answer stops naming you, nothing measurable happens on your website, because the visit that would have told you never existed. You cannot see a customer who never arrived.
- The answer is often the whole transaction. A person can read “three good options” and act on one of them without opening a single website. Being named is no longer the step before the visit; sometimes it is the entire event.
What it looks like in practice
The word is abstract. The work is not. Four examples, all of them ordinary:
1 a coffee roaster
Ask an assistant “who does single-origin coffee subscriptions in Manchester” and see who it names. If it names three competitors and not you, that is not a mystery, it is a brief. The follow-up question is whether you have a page that actually answers that question, in those words.
2 a locked front door
A small file at the root of every website, robots.txt, lists which automated visitors are allowed in. A lot of sites quietly block the AI companies’ fetchers, often because a plugin or a security setting did it without saying so. Nothing can quote a page it is not allowed to open.
3 an empty shell
Some sites build their content with JavaScript after the page loads. Some automated readers only take the raw file and never run that code, so what they get is an empty shell where your product descriptions should be.
4 three different stories
The website says one thing, the LinkedIn page says another, an old directory listing says a third. A model reading all three has no confident answer to “what does this company do.”
None of those four is exotic, and none of them is a marketing idea. That is the honest shape of most of this work: unremarkable problems that were invisible until the shelf got shorter.
Named from memory, or read from your page
This is the distinction that matters most, and it is the one most tools quietly blur.
Two completely different things can happen inside these systems, and from the outside they look identical.
Sometimes the machine already knows your name. It absorbed an enormous amount of the web while it was being built, and your business is somewhere in what it absorbed. Ask it for coffee roasters and it produces names out of that memory. It may never have opened your website. It may be describing your business as it was two years ago, at an address you have since left.
Sometimes it goes and reads. For questions that need current information, the engine fetches real web pages, reads them, and links them as the source of what it says. That is a citation, and it is the one that can send you a visitor.
Being named is a reputation fact. Being cited is a plumbing fact. They come with opposite instructions:
- Named but never read. The model knows of you and never touches your site. That points at something technical: a blocked crawler, a page that does not render, a site nothing can get into. Writing more blog posts will not fix a door that is locked.
- Read but rarely named. Engines will fetch and quote you when a question is specific enough to send them looking, but you are not part of the picture they hold of your category. That points at absence from the places the model learned from — the roundups, the comparison articles, the directories, the forum threads other people wrote.
A dashboard that gives you one number called “visibility” cannot tell you which of those two you are in, which means it cannot tell you what to do next. The six things that can honestly be measured are worth reading before you buy anything in this category.
What you can actually check
Careful here, because this is where the field is at its least honest.
No published factors
No engine publishes what makes it name one business rather than another. Not one of them. Anybody handing you “the nine GEO ranking factors” has invented a list, or repeated somebody else’s invented list. There is no mechanism to point at, and this page is not going to pretend otherwise.
What can be said is narrower and more useful: there are things you can check about your own site, each of which is plainly necessary for a machine to use you, and none of which is a guarantee that it will.

One item deserves its own sentence, because the industry oversells it. llms.txt is a proposed file for telling AI systems about your site. No major AI vendor has confirmed reading it. It costs ten minutes and it might matter later; anyone describing it as the thing that makes AI read your site is ahead of the evidence.
What every row above has in common is that it is checkable, today, by you. That is the difference between the work and the folklore.
What nobody can promise
Say this to any vendor and watch what happens.
A mention. Nobody controls what a model says about a category. Not the vendor, not you, and on any given day not entirely the engine either.
A ranking. There is no ranking. There is a sentence, and it varies. “Ranked first in ChatGPT” describes one run of one question, screenshotted.
A score. Any single visibility score is a weighting somebody chose, and they chose it. Ask what goes into it before you let it move your decisions.
A stable answer. Ask the same engine the same question five times and you will get five slightly different answers, because that is how these systems generate text. A single check is closer to a coin flip than a measurement. Numbers worth acting on are averages across repeated runs, watched over weeks.
Guarantees in this category are weather control. What can be promised is the diagnosis and the artifact: the check that tells you whether the door is locked, the page that answers the question you were losing.
Where to start
Four steps, in this order, none of them expensive.
- Ask the engines your customers’ actual question and read what comes back. Write down who gets named instead of you.
- Check whether the fetchers can get in. Crawler access and whether your pages render without JavaScript are yes/no facts, and both are common failures. Both checks are in the free tools.
- Find the questions you have no page for. The competitor named in that answer usually has one.
- Then measure it repeatedly, not once, so you can tell a change from noise.
Nobody can make a machine recommend you. What you can do is stop being the business it has no particular reason to name.

Can anyone guarantee my business gets mentioned by ChatGPT?
No, and a guarantee is the clearest sign to walk away. Nobody outside the engine controls what it says, and answers vary between identical runs. What can honestly be promised is the diagnosis and the deliverable: whether you are named today, who is named instead, and the fixes and pages that address it.
How is GEO measured?
By asking engines a fixed set of customer questions, repeatedly, and recording what came back: whether you were named, whether a page of yours was actually fetched and cited, who was named instead, and which checks failed to run. A single check is not a measurement. Surfaces with no programmatic route cannot be measured at all, only spot-checked, and should be labelled that way.
